Why Proper Enclosure Cooling Matters

Industrial control cabinets, server enclosures and outdoor switchgear are home to some of the most expensive and sensitive equipment in modern facilities. Variable frequency drives, PLCs, servo controllers, communication switches and power supplies all generate heat — and every degree above their rated temperature shortens their service life. Enclosure Cooling Lab exists to make sure that heat is removed reliably, predictably and efficiently, so your operations never stop.

Studies have repeatedly shown that the failure rate of electronic components roughly doubles for every 10°C rise above their nominal operating temperature. That makes enclosure cooling one of the highest-ROI investments in any control system. A correctly sized cabinet air conditioner or heat exchanger can extend equipment life by years, eliminate unplanned downtime and reduce energy waste at the same time.

Our engineering team specializes in designing the right thermal solution for your exact application — whether that is a single panel on a packaging line, a row of switchgear in a substation, or a fleet of telecom cabinets distributed across a national network. We combine standard catalog products with bespoke engineering to deliver a cooling system that fits your enclosure, climate, duty cycle and budget.

Cabinet Air Conditioners Built for Industrial Duty

Industrial cabinet air conditioners are the backbone of any high-density enclosure. Unlike consumer-grade cooling, our units are engineered for 24/7 operation in environments full of dust, oil mist, vibration and electromagnetic interference. Each unit features a sealed refrigerant circuit, hermetic compressor and corrosion-resistant heat exchangers, ensuring long service intervals and stable internal temperatures even when ambient conditions are extreme.

We offer cooling capacities ranging from 300 W up to 6 kW, in side-mount, top-mount and partial-recess configurations. Every unit can be specified with digital controllers, condensate management, alarm contacts, and remote monitoring — so your maintenance team always knows the status of every cabinet in the plant.

Fan Filter Units and Passive Ventilation

When ambient temperatures are moderate and the heat load is limited, a high-quality fan filter unit is often the most cost-effective solution. Our filter fans combine high airflow rates with low noise, easy filter replacement and a long-life motor that is rated for continuous duty. Matching exhaust filters and IP-rated housings allow you to maintain pressurization and keep dust, insects and humidity out of the enclosure.

For applications where external air must never enter the cabinet — such as paint shops, food processing plants or coastal installations — we recommend pairing a heat exchanger with internal circulation fans. This keeps the enclosure fully sealed while still removing the heat generated inside.

Heat Exchangers for Sealed Enclosures

Air-to-air and air-to-water heat exchangers remove heat without exchanging air between the cabinet and its environment. This makes them the preferred solution for IP54, IP55 and IP66 enclosures, harsh industrial atmospheres and clean rooms. Our heat exchangers are available in compact wall-mount, recessed and top-mounted versions, with cooling capacities tailored to your heat load and target internal temperature.

Air-to-water units offer particularly high specific cooling power — up to several kilowatts per liter of water — making them ideal for high-density power electronics, laser systems and industrial servers connected to a chilled-water loop. We size, specify and integrate every component, including hoses, manifolds, valves and condensate management.

Outdoor and Harsh-Environment Cooling

Telecom shelters, EV charging stations, water treatment plants and renewable energy sites all rely on enclosures installed outdoors. These cabinets face direct sunlight, rain, snow, salt spray and dramatic temperature swings — conditions that destroy ordinary cooling equipment within months. Our outdoor enclosure cooling systems are designed from day one to survive these challenges.

We supply NEMA 3R, NEMA 4 and NEMA 4X rated cooling units with epoxy-coated coils, stainless-steel hardware and UV-resistant housings. Optional sun shields, anti-condensation heaters and low-ambient kits ensure stable performance from -40°C up to +55°C ambient. Every outdoor solution can be specified with cellular or Ethernet-based remote monitoring so operators are alerted to any anomaly before equipment is damaged.

Custom Engineering and OEM Support

Many of our most successful projects start with a single conversation: "We need cooling, but nothing in the catalog quite fits." That is exactly what our custom engineering team is for. We work with machine builders, panel shops, system integrators and end users to deliver OEM cooling solutions that match exact mechanical, electrical and aesthetic requirements.

Typical custom projects include modified cooling capacities, special voltages and frequencies (208 V, 400 V, 480 V, 50/60 Hz), unusual mounting orientations, integrated condensate evaporators, painted housings to match a brand color, EX-rated components for hazardous areas, and full thermal redesigns of legacy panels. We provide complete CAD drawings, BOMs, factory acceptance test reports and installation documentation for every custom build.

Thermal Design and Sizing Services

Sizing a cooling system is the most important step in any enclosure project. Undersizing leads to overheating and component failure; oversizing wastes energy, increases cost and can cause condensation problems. Enclosure Cooling Lab offers free heat-load calculations as part of every quotation. Just send us your panel layout, internal heat load (in watts), maximum ambient temperature and target internal temperature, and our engineers will recommend the right product and configuration.

For larger or more complex projects, we provide full CFD-based thermal simulation, hot-spot analysis and airflow optimization. This is particularly valuable for high-density cabinets, server rooms inside industrial enclosures and applications with strict temperature gradients across multiple components.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

Energy use is a major component of the total cost of ownership for any cooling system. Our latest generation of inverter-driven cabinet air conditioners reduces energy consumption by up to 50% compared with traditional fixed-speed units, by continuously matching cooling output to actual heat load. Combined with eco-friendly refrigerants such as R-513A and R-454C, our products help your organization meet ESG and decarbonization targets without compromising reliability.

Where appropriate, we also recommend hybrid solutions — for example, a fan filter unit operating during cool hours combined with an air conditioner during peak ambient — to minimize total energy consumption. Every quotation includes an estimated annual energy cost so you can compare options on a true total-cost basis.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions our engineering team receives most often. Need something specific? Reach out — we are happy to help.

How do I choose the right cooling capacity for my enclosure?+
The required cooling capacity depends on three main factors: the total heat dissipated inside the enclosure (in watts), the maximum ambient temperature, and the target internal temperature. Our engineers can calculate this for you free of charge — just send us a list of components, your ambient conditions and your panel size, and we will recommend the right product.
When should I use a fan filter unit instead of an air conditioner?+
If the maximum ambient temperature is at least 5–10°C below your target internal temperature and the surrounding air is reasonably clean, a fan filter unit is usually the most cost-effective and energy-efficient solution. When ambient temperatures are higher, or when the air contains dust, oil mist, salt or corrosive vapors, a closed-loop solution such as a cabinet air conditioner or heat exchanger is required.
Can you provide cooling for outdoor enclosures?+
Yes. We supply NEMA 3R, NEMA 4 and NEMA 4X rated cooling solutions specifically designed for outdoor installation. These units feature epoxy-coated coils, UV-resistant housings, sun shields and optional anti-condensation heaters for cold climates. They are widely used in telecom, EV charging, water treatment and renewable energy applications.
Do you offer custom or OEM cooling solutions?+
Absolutely. A significant share of our work is custom engineering for OEM machine builders and panel shops. We design and manufacture cooling assemblies tailored to your mechanical layout, electrical requirements, target capacity and even your brand color. Quantities from a single prototype to several hundred units per year are supported.
What refrigerants do your cabinet air conditioners use?+
Our standard product range uses modern, low-GWP refrigerants such as R-513A and R-454C, depending on capacity and region. All units are fully sealed at the factory and require no field charging. We also support legacy R-134a installations for retrofit projects when needed.
Do your cooling units offer remote monitoring?+
Yes. Most of our cabinet air conditioners and heat exchangers can be specified with digital climate controllers, alarm contacts and optional remote monitoring gateways supporting Modbus, Ethernet and cellular connectivity. This allows your operations team to monitor cabinet temperature, fan status, filter condition and alarms from anywhere.
What lead times should I expect?+
Standard catalog products typically ship within 1–2 weeks. Custom or large-quantity orders are usually delivered in 4–8 weeks depending on configuration and components. We always confirm exact lead times in writing as part of our quotation, and we offer expedited production for urgent projects.
Do you provide installation and commissioning support?+
Yes. While most of our products are designed for easy installation by qualified electricians or panel builders, our engineering team is available to support commissioning, training and troubleshooting. Larger projects can include on-site supervision and acceptance testing under a separate service agreement.
